Topic: Ok I’m Here. What Now? Advice & Links for Educators New to Virtual Worlds

Photos by Grizzla & Iggy. Join our VWER groups at Flickr and Koinup to add your own pictures!

Iggy’s Note: This transcript is chock-full of links. I’m not going to have time to aggregate them in a list here, but I have verified as many as possible with teleports. I was in my H.P. Lovecraft monster avatar for Halloween. Whatever you wear, caveat avatar! Thank Cthulhu for my checking…three of the links (even one by our own Kali) dumped me into the wretched hive of scum and villainy called The Ahern-Morris “Welcome Area.”

Even usually tranquil sites can have freaks. A dog threatened to beat me up at Vassar’s Sistine Chapel. I told him I was a pacifist.

Note that many SLURLs will not work if you are in a third-party viewer, but you may be able to copy/paste to your Map Window. Good luck grid-hopping.

Kali Pizzaro: Hi everyone, and welcome to the Virtual Worlds Education Roundtable. We meet each Thursday at 11:30am SLT for an hour. 7:30pm In UK

Kali Pizzaro: The Virtual Worlds Education Roundtable is a forum to educate and inform the community about issues that are important and relevant to education.

Kali Pizzaro: This is a public meeting, so we will be keeping and publishing a transcript of what is said in local chat. If you’ve not seen our transcripts, you should check them out – they are an excellent information asset.

Kali Pizzaro: The transcripts can be found at our web site http://www.vwer.org – select the LIBRARY tab at the top.

Kali Pizzaro: The Virtual Worlds Education Roundtable continues to develop a community of educators from around the world with a variety of thoughts, needs, and ideas. Please join the Virtual Worlds Education Roundtable group here in SL. If you are on Facebook,

Kali Pizzaro: please join our group there – Virtual Worlds Education Roundtable.

Kali Pizzaro: You can also find and post pictures to our Flickr group and follow us on Twitter @VWER. When you blog or tweet, please remember to include the tag #vwer.

Kali Pizzaro: Tonight’s theme is Ok I’m here. What now? (any VW) – Lets update the list for new educators

Merlin Moonshadow: Michael Smith, IT professional at Emory University

Kali Pizzaro: oh cognitive science

Sere Timeless (serenek.timeless): /me nods

Ridvan-Researcher (ridvan.atolia): Ridvan Ata, searching teaching opportunities in virtual worlds in blended situations, the university of Sheffield, UK

Group_002

Tora3: Im vikki or Tora3 and im a uk undergraduate looking to do some research inworld on tradition learning vs e-learning

Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): Merlin and I are almost neighbors.

Sere Timeless (serenek.timeless): /me waves to Ridvan.

Merlin Moonshadow: Yes, just down the road a bit. πŸ™‚

Kali Pizzaro: Woo Tora3 Kali waves from Glasgow

Ridvan-Researcher (ridvan.atolia): and i will tell you that Sheila Webber is my superb supervisor πŸ™‚

Kali Pizzaro: gone to the woman with the arrows in her hat

Sere Timeless (serenek.timeless): /me laughs

Kali Pizzaro: ok so folks what we are looking to do today is put together

Kali Pizzaro: a transcript

Kali Pizzaro: with fab stuff for new educators who want to work in VWS

Kali Pizzaro: so to start I am looking for links to VWs

Kali Pizzaro: so Sl is an easy one who has a slurl for that lol

Kali Pizzaro: then maybe Jokaydia etc etc

Profesora Farigoule: err… umm… I have to confess I am behind in my homework {coff coff}..

Profesora Farigoule: so is there a way to add to transcript later today? didn’t get my “list” together

Kali Pizzaro: just search the inventory you will have plenty of time

Kali Pizzaro: πŸ˜‰

Kali Pizzaro: multitask folks

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: Sure–you can IM me or e-mail me later additions

Kali Pizzaro: even the men

Profesora Farigoule: okay

Kali Pizzaro: cough

Claudia13 Rossini: lol

Koni Lanzius: hehe

Merlin Moonshadow: lol

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: I can amend the transcript later too

Anastasios Aurotharius: I saw some amazing stuff going on with Wonderland yesterday…but that’s a tool kit…not a VW per se…and I saw the presenation via www.livestream.com so that was kind of special too

Shailey Garfield: I would start by suggesting a visit to the Virtual Ability Island. It is not only a great build but has a facility for orientation

Merlin Moonshadow: I came here hoping to get a list that I can show to faculty and say “see what you could be doing in VWs?”

Tray (tray.rivera): ditto

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: Question: Is it still possible to have new avatars rezz through an educational portal such as New Media Consortium or Caledon’s Oxbridge University?

Profesora Farigoule: yes – Virtual Ability Orientation !!! put that on the list. I recommend it too

Koni Lanzius: any LMs to this stuff?

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: I try to avoid the LL Welcome areas like the plague

Sere Timeless (serenek.timeless): I think one can still come in through NMC.

Merlin Moonshadow: Yes, AVs are still rezzing at Oxbridge, I’m pretty sure.

Sere Timeless (serenek.timeless): But every time I meet a new educator in SL I direct them to Caledon Oxbridge.

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: thanks, Sere, I used to bring in students there and can share the SLURL

Koni Lanzius: thanks!

Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): Definitely, Iggy, although even Caledon has its weirdoes.

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/NMC%20Orientation/71/117/33

Shailey Garfield: I would also suggest looking through the Destinations on the Second Life website which has pointers to locations in different domains (Arts, Science, etc.)

Sere Timeless (serenek.timeless): One good thing about Oxbridge is if you don’t actually come into SL there, you can still set the sim to Home.

Koni Lanzius: ahh

Kali Pizzaro: http://iliveisl.com/

Kali Pizzaro: here is sim on a stick

Kali Pizzaro: i am going to be asking for slurls etc soon

Claudia13 Rossini: is that a PG sim?

Koni Lanzius: whoa, sim on a stick?

Merlin Moonshadow: Oxbridge is at http://slurl.com/secondlife/Caledon%20Oxbridge/92/198/28

Kali Pizzaro: splitting into disciplines

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: Thanks, Merlin. Fast fingers!

Kali Pizzaro: πŸ˜‰

Shailey Garfield: I think that it is important to have a mentor in the early days or a guide who can help to show you around and introduce you to others. So just having landmarks may not be enough.

Merlin Moonshadow: My one contribution for the day. πŸ™‚

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: The Oxbridge sim is rated General

AddisonGreymyst_ThynkaLittle_ThursXu_ProfesoraFarigoule_001

  • Theodore Theseus says:

Can you believe that a gathering of notable educators wasted the time sitting about doing this for an hour? Look at the list, lots of university faculty here in attendance. My point is that if they were given this task people could have completed note cards, handed them in, and then compiled them. Instead the collective mind of this group sat around making a incomplete list of SL educational sites got a data base search might have accomplished more effectively.

In the meantime the educational paradigm of Second Life is stagnating in a corporate virtual world that promotes adult content and consumerism.

      Thanks for your thoughts.

    • Iggy says:

I may not be on your “notable educator” list, but I’m a notable curmudgeon when stirred up πŸ™‚

If you think our work a waste of time, you need not come to our meetings, and, in fact, my day would be brighter if 1) you drank some milk of human kindness, as Scrooge did with the Ghost of Christmas Present in some tellings of Dickens’ tale or 2) vanished into the mists of your discontent.

For more than three years, VWER has been a source of useful collaboration for me, and a social occasion to share ideas in a synchronous manner. But to each his own.
