Birdie Newcomb: Birdie Newborn, newborn publisher

Claudia13 Rossini: Claudia in both worlds, builder….

barbarathelibrarian Magic: Hello, I am Barbara Janson, chief librarian of Johnson & Wales University and a third year doctoral student researching education and virtual worlds

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: /me is Joe Essid, U Richmond Writing Center & English Dept. I run Nevermore, a sim based on the work of Edgar Allan Poe, located in Jokaydia Grid, an OpenSim Grid for educators and soon, in Second Life at Glasgow Caledonian’s campus!

Sheila Yoshikawa: I teach in the iSchool at Sheffield University UK

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: actually…open now in SL :)

Zotarah Shepherd: I am working on an MA in Education Technology at Sonoma State University in northern California. I finished all my classes. My Thesis project: Teaching and Learning Life Awareness & Success Skills in Virtual Worlds.

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): I am Evalyn Gossett, RN Lecturer at IU Northwest School of Nursing

Anastasios Aurotharius: Ben Linson, Boston, engineer, educator, entrepreneur

Kali Pizzaro: Woop to the RN

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): smile

Tori Landau: student at the Open University, previous to that did computer based learning and passionate about the potential that vws have for education

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): I agree Tori

Kali Pizzaro: anyone else

Kali Pizzaro: going

Paul Emery (casias.falta): Paul Emery work with opensim and SL and alliedmedial.org. I would like to pass anote to you all if that is ok

Tori Landau: ok with me

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): and me

Birdie Newcomb: sure

Kali Pizzaro: going

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: Pass me a $100 note, please

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): of course

Kali Pizzaro: gone to the broad in the hat at the back

Claudia13 Rossini: make mine $1000

barbarathelibrarian Magic: sure

Duncan Ramer: hey everyone

Zotarah Shepherd: Ok

Kali Pizzaro: HI Duncan

Anastasios Aurotharius: hello Duncan

Kali Pizzaro: yeah

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: :)

MarlboroDrezno: hej

MarlboroDrezno Resident: hey

Paul Emery (casias.falta): should have said it is re the alliedmedia.org conference coming this summer and it an invitation to participate

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): hello Ducan

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): Thank you Paul

Kali Pizzaro: great pass that round then Casais

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: sure, Paul. Thanks.

Claudia13 Rossini: (damn, i was hoping it was a mash note)

Anastasios Aurotharius: did people see the news that the number of opensim regions has surpassed SL?

Kali Pizzaro: ok so before we started Claudia you had a question

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: Pappy Enoch will send you one, Claudia.

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): i did not see that

Kali Pizzaro: oh sorry Ana

Duncan Ramer: really?

Tori Landau: nooo

Kali Pizzaro: lets go with that first

Kali Pizzaro: yes i saw that

barbarathelibrarian Magic: wow awesome!

Claudia13 Rossini: i was just wondering if anyone had seen ‘Life 2.0′…

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): i cannot get open sim to work for me

Claudia13 Rossini: lol, thanks Iggy

barbarathelibrarian Magic: not yet…

Birdie Newcomb: no

Duncan Ramer: I have had the same trouble with open sim

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: yes, heard this…about OS Regions. From Hypergrid Business News perhaps?

Birdie Newcomb: wuzzat?

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): no

Paul Emery (casias.falta): easiest access to opensim is probably osgrid.org

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: You need to have the right client…It works well for me with Imprudence but I need a newer viewer

Zotarah Shepherd: How many OS grids are there now? Anyone know?

Kali Pizzaro: ok so cat herding in order lol already

Kali Pizzaro: lol

Duncan Ramer: I’ve loaded the hippo viewer a few times and I can’t get in

barbarathelibrarian Magic: Yes I use Imprudence for mine

Kali Pizzaro: i can get in with hippo

Birdie Newcomb: Hippo works for me

Zotarah Shepherd: Imprudence works for me in OS

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): thanksPaul

Claudia13 Rossini: Boy Lane does a viewer designed for other grids.though Windows only

Giorgio Lepe (photoshopguy): I’m using the Firestorm viewer

Giorgio Lepe (photoshopguy): It seems pretty good

Anastasios Aurotharius: http://www.hypergridbusiness.com/2012/02/opensim-exceeds-second-life-private-regions/

Birdie Newcomb: havent’ tried Firestorm yet

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: We cannot underestimate this problem…one of our SL educators just gave up…putting in the grid info for an OS grid was too much to handle for a Type B personality

Kali Pizzaro: thanks Aanstasios

Giorgio Lepe (photoshopguy): Better than the original Phoenix

Kali Pizzaro: lol

Kali Pizzaro: yeah i do like just tp about easily

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: thanks, Anastasios…you are faster with the clipboard than I am

Giorgio Lepe (photoshopguy): Do educators get any special considerations on SL? Like premium accounts.

Duncan Ramer: they used to

Duncan Ramer: but not really any more

Kali Pizzaro: nope nowt now me thinks is that right folks

Giorgio Lepe (photoshopguy): too bad

MarlboroDrezno Resident: interesting thought, but if education is not on the side of education

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: Well, GIorgio…let me tell you something: I pay $300 a YEAR to Jokay. After the Linden discount ended, I’d have paid that in tier here, every month

Kali Pizzaro: explain Marlboro

Giorgio Lepe (photoshopguy): I read that immersive education is getting stronger on the more dedicated software level

Giorgio Lepe (photoshopguy): There’s a company called EON Reality

MarlboroDrezno Resident: I might also depend on man’s education in the important matter of educating the young man

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: so no going back to SL for this educator, unless I have a white knight like Kali to sponsor me

Duncan Ramer: I have a sim for my school and the annual tier is 3500.00 usd

MarlboroDrezno Resident: “a lot”,[["adverb","much","a lot","many"]]

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: ouch…this is why the International Spaceflight Museum almost closed

Giorgio Lepe (photoshopguy): sounds like it’s gotten out of hand

barbarathelibrarian Magic: yes, that is THE problem

Duncan Ramer: yeah the only way I am keeping my sim for next year is to either cut the price in half or share my some with another educator

Kali Pizzaro: we need to share the cost between a few places me thinks

Kali Pizzaro: in the future

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): that is expensive

Kali Pizzaro: yes Duncan

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: but if you can make do with a mainland parcel, SL can still be decent. You have the community.

Tori Landau: the OU just closed an entire region due to funding

Kali Pizzaro: ah Tori that is a shame

Zotarah Shepherd: I still have mainland parcels

Giorgio Lepe (photoshopguy): I’ve been thinking of going to a premium account.

barbarathelibrarian Magic: Yes, my little plot in Cybrary City is only $350 per year.

Giorgio Lepe (photoshopguy): What do others think?

Kali Pizzaro: but you know is it funding really or is it because it is not used enough

Tori Landau: yes, still have dept of computing sims but sad

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): my university finally got an island, but i am under constraints to do what i want to do

Claudia13 Rossini: Don;t you guys think this is pretty normal, considering we are still on the cusp of the developing VW’s thing?

Giorgio Lepe (photoshopguy): What about private instructing

Giorgio Lepe (photoshopguy): Adobe training, etc

Zotarah Shepherd: I have had a premium account from the beginning of my time here Feb 2007.

Duncan Ramer: What I think would be ideal would be to share my island with 2 or three other schools that are in different time zones then we would all have use of the whole sim

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: It’s a good bargain, Giorgio. I like the 300L stipend and use it to by props for our build at Kali’s Uni. AT $72 US/ Year it’s a good deal.

Kali Pizzaro: yes Duncan that is what we are thinking

Kali Pizza: we should maybe talk for the future

roMarlboroDrezno Resident: the future is important

Duncan Ramer: I would like to!

Zotarah Shepherd: I like sharing resources

Tori Landau: i’ve a premium account too, useful for when there is a problem

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): so i need funding for my nursing course outside the university then

barbarathelibrarian Magic: Had premium since 2008

Tori Landau: agree with Duncan

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): ?

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: BTW, if you are interested in the latest on SL’s two Spaceports, or have sent your students there…

Kali Pizzaro: we have a nursing ward etc Shawnta

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: http://nwn.blogs.com/nwn/2012/02/international-spaceflight-museum-will-return-to-sl-spaceport-alpha.html

barbarathelibrarian Magic: Thank you! :-)

Duncan Ramer: cool!

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): Kali could we work with you then?

Kali Pizzaro: of course

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): kk

Kali Pizzaro: friend me and lets talk

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): yes

Zotarah Shepherd: “Insufficient permissions to read notecard.” Did you change the permissions, Casias?

Sheila Yoshikawa: i gotit ok

Giorgio Lepe (photoshopguy): I know they offer a home with a premium acct.

Paul Emery (casias.falta): oh crap

Kali Pizzaro: me too

Tori Landau: mine is ok

Duncan Ramer: yeah but there is not much you can do with it

Giorgio Lepe (photoshopguy): but what about a training facility instead

Tori Landau: note card that is

Zotarah Shepherd: Ok maybe just my screen thanks

Claudia13 Rossini: i’m premium.but i’m not destitute enough to live in a linden house……

Giorgio Lepe (photoshopguy): yeah, I agree

Zotarah Shepherd: I agree too

Giorgio Lepe (photoshopguy): I would like to share work and display work

Sheila Yoshikawa: I di get one once (linden house) but I got bored pretty quickly

Giorgio Lepe (photoshopguy): since I’m a graphic designer

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: Claudia asked about Life 2.0…here’s the URL for the film: http://life2movie.com/

Duncan Ramer: I have an island and I prefer yacht living to a house

Claudia13 Rossini: (next life i’m learning to spell and type)

Kali Pizzaro: ha

MarlboroDrezno Resident: I also had a house, but I got bored in high maintenance costs

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: My office is just a floaty cube you can fall out of. I dislike having to abide by the metaphors of RL here

Zotarah Shepherd: I had built my own low prim house laready and saw no Linden houses that were better than mine.

Claudia13 Rossini: i expect i’m going to get really pissed watching it

Duncan Ramer: brb

VWER 16 Feb 2012

Kali Pizzaro: has anyone seen it

Tori Landau: hadn’t even head of it (blushes)

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): will watch movie when done here

Claudia13 Rossini: i only just found it the other day on itunes

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: Yes, Claudia…will be typical “sex and divorce fare” I reckon..just as in 2008

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): thanks for link

Birdie Newcomb: what is this, an affair?

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: well, maybe true love after SL..that would be nice

Birdie Newcomb: addiction 2.0?

Birdie Newcomb: Hmm, maybe that’s me

Claudia13 Rossini: another skewed view of VW’s i expect………though it’s not suprising.a lot of people i meet have no idea there is an educational foundation in SL

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: we cannot deny that it happens here…consider the usage patterns among social users…a small % makes up a large % of hours logged

Kali Pizzaro: yes or even just the great communities of practice

Tori Landau: agree, the wrecked marriages tend to make the headlines

Kali Pizzaro: about many many

Kali Pizzaro: good support groups

Loren Restless: Hi everybody!!! :D :D :D

Claudia13 Rossini: sex sells……pity about that

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: I’d be addicted if I could drive my fake ’67 GTO well on the fake roads.

Claudia13 Rossini: LOL

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: I keep using “fake” to give this a sense of perspective

Kali Pizzaro: yeah i am fed up hearing that there is something wrong with being in SL from the facebook group

Kali Pizzaro: lol

Kali Pizzaro: Hi Loren

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): got excited about the movie,

barbarathelibrarian Magic: Second Life makes networking possible for many people who cannot affort to attend meetings or conferences

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): hehehehe

Kali Pizzaro: but it is hard to motivate educators when times are tough

Kali Pizzaro: yes Barb

Claudia13 Rossini: Kali.your Scottish friend……..he talked about VW’s being an ‘extension’ or life

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: FB is “fake” too…it’s a pimped version of us…Castronova calls FB profiles “avatars” in his book Synthetic Worlds

barbarathelibrarian Magic: Or, are unable to travel because of physical impairment

Tori Landau: agree barbara, I’m one of them

Kali Pizzaro: who Mark he is English

Kali Pizzaro: lol

Kali Pizzaro: GAnn

Claudia13 Rossini: yes, Gann

Claudia13 Rossini: english scottish…ok, sorry about that, laughs

Kali Pizzaro: English but i am sure he will appreciate the compliment

Kali Pizzaro: compliment

Kali Pizzaro: lol

Kali Pizzaro: sorry Sheila Tori

Kali Pizzaro: ;-)

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: but some content is just not possible IRL, though it’s fake here…my kids rode to orbit from the International Space Museum on that Gemini rocket. They loved it.

Sheila Yoshikawa: no, one will always be inferior

Sheila Yoshikawa: lol

Claudia13 Rossini: but computer addiction just because we are exploring new technology…..i think not

Kali Pizzaro: good that you have insight

Kali Pizzaro: indeed

Kali Pizzaro: CLaudia

Sheila Yoshikawa: what does “fake” mean anyway in a digital context?

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: I agree, Claudia. There are many “addictions” and I’ve seen car fanatics neglect their spouses.

Claudia13 Rossini: do i have an addiction to books just because i read several a week?

Kali Pizzaro: indeed is this not real?

Tori Landau: i’ll use Claudia’s line next time I’m told that I’ve been on the computer too long °͜°

Kali Pizzaro: is there a virtual and real?

Sheila Yoshikawa: I have an addiction to sitting down

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: No, if Socrates is correct. All we do IRL is a shadow.

Birdie Newcomb: lol

barbarathelibrarian Magic: I think addiction is when the activity interferes with vital elements of life such as work, family, and health

Claudia13 Rossini: i don’t think so Kali………you all are certainly real to me

Sheila Yoshikawa: @barbara yes there are some classic signs

Birdie Newcomb: or which is the vital element

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): sounds like projection,

Sheila Yoshikawa: a couple of my students have just done searches on “internet addiction” for an assignment lol

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): projection to cover their insecurity and lack of creativitiy

CLEOPATRA Xigalia: continued use despite adverse consequences

VWER Feb. 16 1/3

Loren Restless: sorry that I interfere, certain dependence comes into being, only this we, then our decisions are really important :)

Tori Landau: difference between virtual and real, could be when people role play in here – have different personalities to their real one, we had a few problems students who treated sl as a game

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): what is the name of the FB group

Zotarah Shepherd: Or Descartes We are all thinking here so we “ARE” real.

Tori Landau: had come in from using WoW

Kali Pizzaro: most of the people I have interviewed have not spoken of offline and online lives this is just another part of their life

Birdie Newcomb: The different personalities — freed from our physical bodies, I don’t consider those unreal, but they work better in virtual worlds

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: You know, I see something IRL among the young that REALLY disturbs me: texting together, in crowds, instead of talking in restaurants

Kali Pizzaro: oh spelling

Kali Pizzaro: lol

Claudia13 Rossini: nods to Iggy

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: They are RL avatars…using their bodies to socialize and pimping their lives online

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): lol

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: My gamer students ALWAYS point this out

Kali Pizzaro: Oh my we are getting deep

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: Piled Higher and Deeper = PhD ma’am

Kali Pizzaro: lol

Kali Pizzaro: feel like it

Paul Emery (casias.falta): the whole discussion of identity and etc could be a long one

Kali Pizzaro: so who else wants to chip in

MarlboroDrezno Resident: very long

Tori Landau: a very long one Zotarah Shepherd: I have not heard that in ages Iggy

Kali Pizzaro: but interesting

Claudia13 Rossini: but look at us…we are a bunch of fairly intelligent people…using SL to communicate ideas…………that’s not an addictive behavior

Kali Pizzaro: ;-)

barbarathelibrarian Magic: sometimes I think texting is their way of dealing with social awkwardness of their teen years – bypassing the face-to-face conversations because they feel shy or vulnerable

Tori Landau: interesting point

Birdie Newcomb: that works

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: true, Claudia. I would race IRL but it’s too expensive if more fun

Birdie Newcomb: I find myself saying things I might not say in RL

Kali Pizzaro: or it is just a way of life for them the way it has always been

Kali Pizzaro: sure Birdie

Paul Emery (casias.falta): seems like the power of vw for ed comes from users hookin up emotionally with their avatars

Claudia13 Rossini: and i can have all the expensive antiques i want in SL……

Kali Pizzaro: yes Casias

Sheila Yoshikawa: Is it also just – that it’s what you do? texting? Sort of like passing notes in class when I was a girl….

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: /me nods at Paul…last week I made that case about why VWs work better than teleconferences. My audience agreed, and only 2 had tried SL

Kali Pizzaro: i am really interested in how fok still follow social norms

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: it’s the embodiment

barbarathelibrarian Magic: Ah yes, can i even remember that far back Sheila?

Kali Pizzaro: yes

CLEOPATRA Xigalia: the danger is that texting will remove a tone of voice , or facial expressoin or a body language element .. this is like what ?

Kali Pizzaro: sheila you rememeber wehn that poor girl tp right in front of your tal and everyone was telling her to sit down

Claudia13 Rossini: i know i generally follow (r/l) social norms .i just do it in my pajamas these days

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: we could use better facial expressions in SL..more social cues

Kali Pizzaro: but their use of emoticons is rather amazing

Kali Pizzaro: lol

Sheila Yoshikawa: yes Kali

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: :P

Sheila Yoshikawa: whatever tal is

Tori Landau: agree Paul, until I had attachment with my av here felt quite strange being in SL

Loren Restless: certain dependence of the virtual world exists, we set in in him, but it is sometimes hard is to go away, we get to know people, their problems, distresses, there are for the moments of delight and pain certain dependence of the virtual world exists, we set in in him, but it is sometimes hard is to go away, we get to know people, their problems, distresses, there are for the moments of delight and pain

Birdie Newcomb: you betcha

Duncan Ramer: we do?

barbarathelibrarian Magic: yes, we had two librarians pass away and we had memorials for them in SL

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: SL is “real enough” to get folks deeply involved. Imagine what future VWs with do, with the sort of graphics in contemporary video games.

Duncan Ramer: Nutz!

MarlboroDrezno Resident: Here are just real people, you’re right

Claudia13 Rossini: i don’t find it hard to go away.i’ll leave my av in my workshop…go lay down, read…….take a soak in the tub…even go out for groceries

Sheila Yoshikawa: Nutz to what?

Kali Pizzaro: yes i was at a memorial for someone Barb

Tori Landau: Yes, we did for staff members, was very moving

Kali Pizzaro: very touching

Duncan Ramer: I was just assigning more reading and math assignments

VWER 16 Feb 2012

Birdie Newcomb: I know probably as many people/avatars in vws as i RL

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: Beer Nutz? I would enjoy a beer right now, Duncan.

Tori Landau: agree Birdie

Paul Emery (casias.falta): interesting discussion folks but i got to go maybe see you next week

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: see you soon, Paul!

Sheila Yoshikawa: bye

Kali Pizzaro: ok Casia thanks for the notecard

MarlboroDrezno Resident: “See you”,[["interjection","See you"]]

Duncan Ramer: later

Tori Landau: bye Paul and ty

Birdie Newcomb: bye Paul

Kali Pizzaro: so do you think our students get that feeling of embodiment

Kali Pizzaro: or are they not in VWs long enough

Birdie Newcomb: maybe not if they are newbies

barbarathelibrarian Magic: I could never afford the air fares to visit my SL friends, but I value them as colleagues in my work

Birdie Newcomb: Takes a while to invest oneself.

Duncan Ramer: and Yes I do agree with you . . . I just try to keep the hs drama to a minimum in sl

Kali Pizzaro: agree Barb and see them as friends

Anastasios Aurotharius: people are different…I think some do and some don’t

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: mine…no way. It’s a thing done or an assignment at best. At least, it’s “creepy” even as they send and receive 100 texts daily.

Birdie Newcomb: Or even to be comfortable with the appearance

Kali Pizzaro: but do they change their avi

Tori Landau: took me about 3 months before stopped feeling I was playing with a doll and happened when spent a few hours continuously in sl at a uni beach party

Claudia13 Rossini: i think some do Kali.but i expect it’s like your friends study….there are levels of immersion and comfort depending on personalities

Kali Pizzaro: ;-)

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: it’s fair to say mine have detested SL..period. They are better with a closed simulation with premade avis. But maybe that is just my campus demographic.

Duncan Ramer: I have had more people tell me I need to get in touch with my inner avie . . . I’m not sure I know what that means

Birdie Newcomb: Part of the comfort comes when others recognize your avatar,

barbarathelibrarian Magic: •´¨*•.¸. Lo0oL :D .¸.•*¨`•

Claudia13 Rossini: nope Iggy.i see exactly the same thing with both univ of penn students and teachers

Birdie Newcomb: and are glad to see you…(Cheers)

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: Pappy Enoch<–Iggy’s Inner Avie :)

Duncan Ramer: recognize My name is over my head . . just like yours

Anastasios Aurotharius: you have to be willing to suspend your disbelief and some people aren’t even comfortable about talking about their emotions….never mind emotional bandwidth

Kali Pizzaro: interesting because Zelda one of the VWER folks made premade avis and has decided to let students make their own next time as they said they would feel more attached to one they made themselves

Sheila Yoshikawa: “in touch with my inner avie ” hmm I think that means zilch

Tori Landau: i’ve heard that too Ignatius, so one staff member is now using OS instead of SL, to have that closed space

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: Seriously, Sheila, not if Yee is right: Proteus Effect

Claudia13 Rossini: grins……..i’ve no idea where Zelda got that idea

Sheila Yoshikawa: I think in terms of interacting with people in premade avis – it is more alienating

Sheila Yoshikawa: i mean for the person not in a premade avi

Birdie Newcomb: Hi Ruth, I’m Ruth.

Kali Pizzaro: ;p;

Kali Pizzaro: Hi Ruth

Tori Landau: agree Sheila – the clone of a clone effect

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: The kids want to finish an assignment. Only a few wanted to customize their premades

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: VWs are not how they socialize. For some of us, they are.

Claudia13 Rossini: the studies show that in customizing your av.you make the connection with it

Kali Pizzaro: interesting mine all change to look like RL self

Kali Pizzaro: as soon as they can

barbarathelibrarian Magic: I think in some instances it is helpful to teach in 3D

Kali Pizzaro: yes Claudia

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): my nursing students love creating their own avatars

barbarathelibrarian Magic: Look at Bloom’s Taxonomy

barbarathelibrarian Magic: I was able to walk up the steps

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): and had them dressed beautifully, and such

Kali Pizzaro: yes Shawta isnt that strange mine too

Birdie Newcomb: remind me

barbarathelibrarian Magic: what a teaching tool!

Claudia13 Rossini: my av, looks a lot like the r/l me minus about 15 years

Kali Pizzaro: ;-)

Duncan Ramer: I have noticed that too Kali . . except for the random wolfs, dragon,s and a few cats

Kali Pizzaro: lol

Birdie Newcomb: minus about 60 pounds

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: Barbara, I agree. The students last semester LOVED the simulation we did in Jokaydia Grid. Only 2 of 15 would not participate and the evals were strong.

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: But that does not mean they want to log in and “hang out”

VWER 16 Feb 2012

Tori Landau: well I don’t have cat ears and a tail rl °͜°

Kali Pizzaro: awwww shame

barbarathelibrarian Magic: Ignatius – visit my library in Jokaydia – Lifelong Learning

Kali Pizzaro: ;-_

Duncan Ramer: would you like a lm?

Kali Pizzaro: ;-)

Duncan Ramer: hahahah

Kali Pizzaro: ok so 15 mins left folks

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): kali, should the nursing students have scrubs for simulation, i do think so what do you think

Kali Pizzaro: nope

Kali Pizzaro: mine are post qualifying

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): i had them all find scrubs,

Kali Pizzaro: so i dont make them

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): ooo

Duncan Ramer: cloths are easy to make would you like a few sets of scrubs?

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: They do that IRL with real kids out on the town. They pimp themselves and lead intricate personal lives. They don’t need avies…yet. Maybe in their 30s, when the college years are gone.

Kali Pizzaro: but pre-lince maybe i would

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): yeah we just changed any pants to scrubs

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: Barbara, thanks! I’ll send Roderick Usher over for a look!

Duncan Ramer: that works too

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): thanks

Claudia13 Rossini: the more they identify with theirs av’s..however they are dressed.the more they can concentrate on the learning

Kali Pizzaro: i have scrubs I think i can give you

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): but will take what you have if you don’t mind

Kali Pizzaro: good point Claudia

Tori Landau: agree Claudia

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): hospital simulation = scrubs

Anastasios Aurotharius: if you search for nurses uniforms…you can buy scrubs in-world

Kali Pizzaro: if they are pre license Shawnta

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): yes i cought, want freebies for students

Sheila Yoshikawa: totally different from scrubbers

Kali Pizzaro: i used volunteer real patients last year and they said it did not matter what the nurse had on in SL when they took their history

Duncan Ramer: I have TONS of freebies for my island and anyone can get them . . no scrubbs yet

barbarathelibrarian Magic: well folks my lunch hour is over

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): yes, research says, it does not matter what nurses wear in real life as well

Claudia13 Rossini: thing is most freebies look pretty bad that doesn’t help with immersion….it makes you (well maybe just me) feel like a cartoon

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): thanks Kali

barbarathelibrarian Magic: a pleasure to see you all

Zotarah Shepherd: Bye Barbara

Kali Pizzaro: cheers Barbara

Tori Landau: bye, you too

barbarathelibrarian Magic: Thank you! :-)

Kali Pizzaro: come back and see us

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): chat later Barbara

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: see you in J Grid!

barbarathelibrarian Magic: Thank you! :-)

Duncan Ramer: I lucked out . . . I have gotten a few designers to give me things for my island when it was on the TG

Sheila Yoshikawa: actually you can get excellent freebies, but you need to spend time hunting round or monitoring for them

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: I wanted to add a plug for the International Spaceflight Museum

Sheila Yoshikawa: well, they are freebies that people need to get for themselves rather than full perms

Kali Pizzaro: go Iggy

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): and then adjust the freebie for you avatar and likes

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: they are looking for crowd-funding and details will be available soon at New World Notes

Duncan Ramer: darned skippy

Tori Landau: past year I’ve found that free stuff that is copy and trans is harder to come by

Sheila Yoshikawa: e.g. at Seraphim HQ, they just put out new stuff, some nice furnture and various wearables

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: Like Bryn Oh, tier is killing their sim. Oh raised $6000 in TWO days for Immersiva

Sheila Yoshikawa: if you want them to learn how to join a group and buy things for free…

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: end of plug…watch http://nwn.com for details

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: details even

Tori Landau: ty Ignatius

Birdie Newcomb: bad url Iggy

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: blast…dead link: http://nwn.blogs.com/

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: there y’all go

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): Thank you

Birdie Newcomb: got it

Tori Landau: ditto

Duncan Ramer: whispers: thanks!

Zotarah Shepherd: Thanks Iggy

Kali Pizzaro: cheers yeah i think they need to seriously look at tier

Claudia13 Rossini: laughs..we better be in for the long haul with VW’s…cause it’s going to take years

Zotarah Shepherd: I agree Claudia

Anastasios Aurotharius: the future is hard to predict

Claudia13 Rossini: we can chip away at the attitudes….but like all good changes, it takes time

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: Here I am, the severed head floating in the punchbowl, but LL cannot afford to cut tier

Kali Pizzaro: yeah i wish folk would open their eyes

Duncan Ramer: /me nods with Anstasios

VWER Feb. 16 2/3

Kali Pizzaro: so crowdfund together

Birdie Newcomb: LL is a rental company.

Kali Pizzaro: by sharing land

Kali Pizzaro: group hug anyone awwww

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: it is their revenue source, period…they cannot go with a $15/month subscription as WoW has done so well

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): i think the young people would get so much from VW learning, but the teachers are resistant

Claudia13 Rossini: i think that’s an excellent idea Kali

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): still want power points

Kali Pizzaro: thank you Claudia

Giorgio Lepe (photoshopguy): sorry I had to step away

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): and lectures

Kali Pizzaro: big gbit of land share the cost put up our own uni signs etc

Kali Pizzaro: bingo

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): group hug yes

Kali Pizzaro: yep

Tori Landau: so do I…. I’ll mention it to the owner of the dept of computing islands at the OU

Birdie Newcomb: me too

Claudia13 Rossini: share builds…like Kali is into nursing…why not link those builds

Kali Pizzaro: woop

Kali Pizzaro: lets talk seriously

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): woop

Duncan Ramer: the problem with most teachers is that were trained with wipe off boards and books its what they are comfortable with

Zotarah Shepherd: Teachers seem resistant to using new ideas even researched ones for a RL classroom.

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: educators are so good at sharing…yes, group hug (almost typed “grope hug”)

Kali Pizzaro: folks Im me if you are serious

Kali Pizzaro: lol that too

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): exactly, boards and books and quizzes

Duncan Ramer: its so far out of their comfort zone

Zotarah Shepherd: Yes

Birdie Newcomb: Thats for mature regions, Iggy

Kali Pizzaro: or email me Evelyn.McElhinney@gcu.ac.uk

Claudia13 Rossini: and i’ll offer help with building if you do Kali

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: /me grins at Birdie

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): i will Kali

Duncan Ramer: all the teachers in my school think I’m nutz

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): and me == nutz too

Kali Pizzaro: fab

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): lol

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: I see our faculty coming around…but doing digital stories or blogs is very different from using a VW in a class

Claudia13 Rossini: lol Duncan..everyone thinks i’m nuts

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): yeah, NUTZ

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): strange looks

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): smile

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: heh. My audience liked the dreads last week.

Kali Pizzaro: folk think this is all i do that is a wee bit of a problem as i am the blended learning lead and do a wee bit more than this ha

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): i like your dreads

Duncan Ramer: whispers: yet I had more graduates connect with colleges last year than all of them combined and its because of vw education and their abilities in the VW

Kali Pizzaro: but i have become known as the person that does second life

Kali Pizzaro: that is if they get the name right lol

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: I told them the VWs are sandboxes for making simulations. They got it

Duncan Ramer: yeah me too

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: I don’t start off with the “second life” metaphor

Duncan Ramer: SL metaphor?

Kali Pizzaro: me neither

Claudia13 Rossini: oh…..good idea Iggy

VWER Feb. 16 3/3

Anastasios Aurotharius: I think what’s going on with Open Sim is exciting

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): i don’t care what they think now, i am finding my way very slowly

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: the sticking point is “you spent 200 hours building Usher???”

Tori Landau: agree Duncan, staff and students mix more socially here than ever would in rl so much better for making connections

Duncan Ramer: I just wish they would quit thinking about it and give it a try just once

Kali Pizzaro: i say it is like 3d facebook to students and a 3d immersive educational tool to faculty lol

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): just need to do the simulations now, got 10 students inworld and no hospital

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: The idea of a parallel life is “creepy” to many, so I skip the “world” idea in favor of “what you can do here”

Kali Pizzaro: yep

Claudia13 Rossini: lol, Iggy.i just put in 40+ building ONE hospital

Kali Pizzaro: we got the hospital so come on down

Duncan Ramer: thats EXACTLY what I do

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: agreed, Claudia, I did the SL rebuild of Usher in fewer than 30 hours

Duncan Ramer: that is what you can do in here!

Kali Pizzaro: maybe we should move all our land together

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: wellll……LL had plans for an edu continent

Duncan Ramer: ok

Duncan Ramer: why not

Kali Pizzaro: make it the educational area

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: but it got scraped when they fired their staff who helped with education

Anastasios Aurotharius: has anyone checked out osgrid?

Zotarah Shepherd: I have

Claudia13 Rossini: we are stronger if we’re untied Kali

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: I’ve never been a LL booster since that awful day

Tori Landau: i’d forgeotten about that, recall it being mentioned at a VWBPE talk now

Kali Pizzaro: ok 1 minute warning

Anastasios Aurotharius: what did you think, Zotarah?

Graham Mills: John Rogate has a 50-sim educator enclave on OSgrid

Duncan Ramer: if I can get someone to share my tier I would pay to have my island moved

Kali Pizzaro: oh one minute gone

Kali Pizzaro: lol

Kali Pizzaro: duncan lets all talk

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: LOL good job cat-herding, Kali

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: thanks!

Kali Pizzaro: phew

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: Next week…it’s…

Anastasios Aurotharius: I tried to find it Graham….it wasn’t easy

Kali Pizzaro: though it was going to go pear shaped

Tori Landau: =^_^= Puuurrrrrrrrrrrsss =^_^=

Kali Pizzaro: Iggyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Zotarah Shepherd: We also have to realize that we draw from the rest of SL and they get value from our builds too. Building an Ivory Tower might not be the way.

Kali Pizzaro: drum roll

Graham Mills: mkholland3 is the one I aim for

Birdie Newcomb: we keep coming back for more

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: oh jeez…I been volunteered

Zotarah Shepherd: I like OS a lot though

Kali Pizzaro: oh i dont mean lock it down

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: how about fund-raising ideas for your project?

Tori Landau: agree Zotarah, it’s why the OU has open groups and sims

Sheila Yoshikawa: I ought to be talking about sharing too, I think, sigh

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): fund raising sounds good, since i don’t know that i can afford to pay for SL rgid or island or whatever

Sheila Yoshikawa: anyway

Sheila Yoshikawa: bye for now, thanks Kali and Iggy

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: see you all next week

Zotarah Shepherd: I like the Hypergrid Adventurers Group

Kali Pizzaro: cheers all

Kali Pizzaro: see you all soon

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): ok will be back next week

Claudia13 Rossini: take care everyone

Evalyn (shawnta.clarence): thank you everyone
