Grizzla Pixelmaid: Hi everyone and welcome to the Virtual Worlds Education Roundtable!
Grizzla Pixelmaid: This is a forum to educate and inform about virtual worlds issues that are important and relevant to education.
Grizzla Pixelmaid: Each week we get a wide variety of educators, from seasoned veterans to the newly-rezzed.
Grizzla Pixelmaid: We meet here each Thursday on the virtual campus of Bowling Green State University, from 11:30-12:30 pm SLT.
Grizzla Pixelmaid: (SLT = “Second Life Time,” which is the same as U.S. Pacific time).
Grizzla Pixelmaid: We’ve met every week since March 2008.
Grizzla Pixelmaid: These Roundtable discussions are held in text chat, not voice chat.
Grizzla Pixelmaid: If you ‘re new to VWER meetings, be aware that the text chat can run pretty quickly.
Grizzla Pixelmaid: Don’t worry if it takes you awhile to get used to two or three conversations going on simultaneously.
Grizzla Pixelmaid: If you make a comment or ask a question that isn’t acknowledged, please don’t take it personally;
Grizzla Pixelmaid: unfortunately some good contributions might be inadvertently overlooked when chat is moving fast.
Grizzla Pixelmaid: If that happens to you, don’t be shy to say the same thing again
Grizzla Pixelmaid: – or IM me and I’ll find a break so I can make sure your important question/comment is addressed.
Praxislady Witt: ooopps, sorry *blushing*
Grizzla Pixelmaid: This is a public meeting, so we keep and publish a transcript of what is said in local chat.
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): no porblem!
Grizzla Pixelmaid: Transcripts from all previous meetings are at our website: http://www.vwer.org – select the LIBRARY tab at the top.
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): other than my spelling
Grizzla Pixelmaid: We have some groups you are welcome to join!
Grizzla Pixelmaid: We love to include members’ photos in the published transcript, so please take pix today and post them to the VWER groups on either Flickr or Koinup.
Grizzla Pixelmaid: Check out the Virtual Worlds Education Roundtable group in Second Life and our group on Facebook.
Grizzla Pixelmaid: Follow us on Twitter@VWER:
Grizzla Pixelmaid: When you blog or tweet, please remember to include the hashtag #VWER.
Grizzla Pixelmaid: Today’s meeting is an Open Forum, so we’re free to ask any questions and make any comments related to virtual worlds and education,
Grizzla Pixelmaid: altho’ I’ll usually gently attempt to keep us on one topic at a time.
Grizzla Pixelmaid: Now… we always begin by introducing ourselves, and if this is your first time here, please say so, so we can take good care of you. Everyone can type at once!
Grizzla Pixelmaid: I’m Chris Robinson, “Virtual Assistant” in the Office of Educational Technology for Georgia Gwinnett College in metro Atlanta.
Birdie Newcomb: Birdie Newborn, college publisher
Claudia13 Rossini: Claudia – infamous builder
Grinn Pidgeon: Dr. Barbara Pittman, Instructional Technologist and adjunct English instructor, Cuyahoga Community College, Cleveland, Ohio
David Stack (richmedia): David Stack, Deputy CIO of UW-Milwaukee
LoCE99Ch8 Morpork: Rosanna Brown, Retired California Community College Librarian
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): /me is Joe Essid, Head Drum Major at Nevermore, a region in OpenSim dedicated to Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher.” Also in Second Life for now at Glasgow Caledonian U’s campus. IRL I teach Lit & Cyberculture at U Richmond and direct the Writing Center.
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): Who else? Don’t be shy.
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): Welcome, Ahlan. We’re all introducing ourselves briefly.
Ahlan Oh: Ahhh, thanks.
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): Anybody else? Going…
Pathfinder Lester: John “Pathfinder” Lester, Chief Learning Officer, ReactionGrid Inc., living in Montreal. http://about.me/pathfinder
Rawlslyn Francis (elphaba.helendale): Rawlslyn Francis – English Professor
Rawlslyn Francis (elphaba.helendale): FSCJ
Galileo Zeplin: Digital Library of Georgia
Ahlan Oh: Alan Epstein, Data Project Manager, Cambridge Public Schools, Massachusetts, USA
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): Wow, Galileo, I guess we’re sort of neighbors.
Galileo Zeplin: aye….hi grizzla!
Zotarah Shepherd: Working on an MA in Education Technology at Sonoma State University in northern California. I finished all my classes. My Thesis project: Teaching and Learning Life Awareness & Success Skills in Virtual Worlds.
Praxislady Witt: Adult educator and corporate trainer in RL, Wash DC
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): (Rawlslyn had her debut as Madeline Usher not long ago!)
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): Anybody else?
STEFANOS (somenakis): we just write?
STEFANOS (somenakis): or also talk ?
ATARTE (marialena.davi): hi
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): Yes, just type it into “nearby chat”
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): just typy-type today no voice
Birdie Newcomb: @stefanos — texting here
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): Hello Atarte, welcome!
Birdie Newcomb: gives us a record
Birdie Newcomb: That way we can all talk at once.
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): We use limited voice for special interviews, but our weekly roundtable meetings are in text chat -
STEFANOS (somenakis): ok
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): in deference to SL’s difficulty with massive amounts of audio
Claudia13 Rossini: (vs r/l, when we all talk at once)
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid):
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): Well, I’d like to give first place to our first-timers today, if they would like to pose a question or bring up a topic. We’d love to know what brought you here, if you’d like to say.
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): OK, no takers yet.. Anybody else come with a burning question or topic?
Birdie Newcomb: I was reminded yesterday of my own early days — and
Birdie Newcomb: I think that I have changed more than SL has changed.
Claudia13 Rossini: we must all have spring fever
Grinn Pidgeon: Is there such a thing as a job board where educators could sign up to volunteer to work on projects, etc.
Birdie Newcomb: @Grinn — what a great idea
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): How so, Birdie? …and Grinn, let’s get to your question in a sec
Birdie Newcomb: I think I came in with great expectations of what could happen,
Birdie Newcomb: th excitement of buiilding just about anything,
Birdie Newcomb: seeing what others were doing
Birdie Newcomb: and happy to see the ed community
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): Yes!
Birdie Newcomb: and yet somehow this didn’t translate into what I had hoped.
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): No paradise in the virtual world either
Birdie Newcomb: so I continue my search.
Claudia13 Rossini: and yet you’re still here like most of us Birdie…..trying to figure out the best way to use this technology
Birdie Newcomb: The limitations weren’t SL so much as what people could break out of their mindset to do.
Marc Rexen: Agree Birdie.
Birdie Newcomb: Burning Life I loved, because that’s what I seem to still want
Birdie Newcomb: Real creativity.
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): yes…Burning Life was like a drug…I wanted more and more
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): Wow
Tori Landau: Agrees re people and Burning Life. I also loved the SLB exhibits
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): SLB is gone too
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): I went to BL this year but there was so much lag, I couldn’t enjoy it
Praxislady Witt: gone?
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): or rather “distributed” now. Path, you once worked on SLB2
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): LL is not sponsoring any sims for either event now.
Birdie Newcomb: I remember black Wednesdays, and it felt like SL was itself experimenting, improving.
Birdie Newcomb: Not so much now.
Pathfinder Lester: ahhhh yes
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): Short-sighted of them to not promote what gives people enthusiasm for SL – what a surprise, LL being short-sighted
Pathfinder Lester: i was the guy who organized the SLB2
Pathfinder Lester: lol
Claudia13 Rossini: lol Griz
Tori Landau: I took part in sl7b. learnt a lot from it and met great people. It’s sad that others don’t have that opportunity now. lol Grizzla
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): What were Black Wednesdays?
Pathfinder Lester: /me is old
Birdie Newcomb: They’d shut down the whole site to re-adjust
Claudia13 Rossini: hands Path a glass for his teeth
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): /me bows at the wisdom of the ancients
Pathfinder Lester: oh jeesh
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): LOL
Pathfinder Lester: I think there was a lot of value in having a central and LL sponsored event
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): What were Black Wednesdays?
Pathfinder Lester: Hosting and putting together a central event like that was messy and crazy and…simply wonderful. In other words, it was a very human endeavor
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): what did a poster at Au’s blog say (looks it up): “if LL can’t be bothered to celebrate their creation, why should we?”
Pathfinder Lester: but LL will do what LL will do. best to only focus on those things you can control in your life. and let go of all else.
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): Well, except celebrations can be about other things – not LL’s creation. There’s lots to celebrate in SL due to its residents, not the company.
Praxislady Witt: maybe LL creates events so others learn and then pick up to continue?
Birdie Newcomb: Well, maybe the new guy can bring back some enthusiasm — not sure that helps the ed community.
Pathfinder Lester: maybe LL creates grids so others learn and pick up to continue on other grids and technologies?
Pathfinder Lester:
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): Hi Kali!
Praxislady Witt: ed community is spread to may other grids, hmmm
Kali Pizzaro: Hey folks sorry I am latet
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): In the grand scheme of things, I agree, Path.
Claudia13 Rossini: somehow i don’t think promoting vampires in LL is much help to the educational community
Pathfinder Lester: /me nods at Grizzla
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): well said, Grizzla and Praxislady. A private version of the BUrn does continue
LoCE99Ch8 Morpork: Bay City Alliance seems to be working with LL and other groups on a joint activity, possibly SLB
Pathfinder Lester: there’s a lot of value in SL and being in SL. but I think “thinking multi-grid” is the way of the future.
Zotarah Shepherd: I agree
Birdie Newcomb: Yes, it’s a box to think outside of
Claudia13 Rossini: nods to Path
Tori Landau: Agree
Kali Pizzaro: yes but I hope we dont spread to thin as I would hate new folks to not meet some of you fantastic people
Kali Pizzaro: oops too
Kali Pizzaro:
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): I think, though, that for quite awhile, multi-grid will be for the more experienced institutions with lots of tech-brain to pour into it. Those of us who are just starting out, SL seems best.
Pathfinder Lester: true, there is always that challenge, definitely
Praxislady Witt: @Path ” “thinking multi-grid” is the way of the future” and will be more seamless than what is happening now?
Pathfinder Lester: I think so, yes
Kali Pizzaro: whatever grid is the best at the time. SL might be good for one class, Jibe another, unity something else
Kali Pizzaro: maybe we dont have to tie to one
Pathfinder Lester: Kali, yes, right tool for right job. I agree
Claudia13 Rossini: think of being able to travel grid to grid, with your inventory and a fully linked IM system….so if Kali is on one grid, i can still IM her from another
Kali Pizzaro: yeah
Pathfinder Lester: and we’re already seeing interesting seamless things happen with Opensim. For example, now you can IM people in completely different grids and see their online status.
Birdie Newcomb: Ooo, kewl
Kali Pizzaro: loves talking to Claudia
Kali Pizzaro: lol
Claudia13 Rossini: laughs
Rawlslyn Francis (elphaba.helendale): (I have to skip out for a bit. Sorry!)
Kali Pizzaro: yes Path what was that device you picked up on jokaydia
Tori Landau: I must try that re ims and different grids
Kali Pizzaro: that allowed that about a year ago
Pathfinder Lester: it was kinda broken for a while
Pathfinder Lester: lol
Pathfinder Lester: sorta kinda sometimes worked
Pathfinder Lester: but now it seems reliable
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): I know that the upgrade at Reaction Grid really expands my options “out there” for Usher
Kali Pizzaro: yeah it was like a we walkie talkie you pinned on your waist ?
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): I decided to use the SL build as a showcase for my “real” build
Pathfinder Lester: Kali, lol, ya there was that device for a while. now it just works in the viewer. no additional devices needed.
Claudia13 Rossini: more like the old days with Yahoo IM’s or..lord.AIM? whatever the AOL thing was.but on steroids and in 3D
Birdie Newcomb: So maybe SL now is a good “starter kit”
Kali Pizzaro: ah bummer i liked the walkie talkie lol
David Stack (richmedia): Ooops. Tornado Drill IRL. Back in a bit.
Pathfinder Lester: whoa take care Rich!
Claudia13 Rossini: one thing we can count on..it may be slow.but VW’s will, are, changing
Kali Pizzaro: ohh my
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): Drill, not warning, right? That’s better.
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): better that’s it’s just a drill, David!
Kali Pizzaro: yes Claudia
Pathfinder Lester: oh DRILL. phew
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): *drill even
Kali Pizzaro: they aint going away
Praxislady Witt: @Birdie, agree, many are not entering SL for the first time because others in RL are discussing
Kali Pizzaro: shouts hey folks wake up and smell the coffee
Kali Pizzaro: not to us of course
Praxislady Witt: *now
Claudia13 Rossini: who here doesn’t get strange looks if you mention VW’s to outsiders
Praxislady Witt: pass a cup over here, heeheeh
Birdie Newcomb: vacan t stares
Pathfinder Lester: I usually lead with “3D Simulations”
Claudia13 Rossini: i get them from dear friends of 30 years, who already know i’m excentric
Pathfinder Lester: seems more folks grok that than Virtual Worlds
Praxislady Witt: some institutions use SL as extra credit
Kali Pizzaro: yeah me too our 3D virtual learning environment part of our blended portfolio – that is what i usually asy now lol
Praxislady Witt: then students learn that SL is “not” a game, haha
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): “simulations online” works well, however, as a rhetorically savvy choice of words
Claudia13 Rossini: lol, nice word play Kali
Pathfinder Lester: nice
Birdie Newcomb: Blended, makes sense.
Claudia13 Rossini: basically, we just lie
Claudia13 Rossini: because who has 5 hours to explain VW’s
Birdie Newcomb: I don’t see very many reasons for a f2f class to go into SL, except maybe for the House of Usher…
Praxislady Witt: to experience the 3D effects, maybe
Birdie Newcomb: 3D, but we’re pretty clunky compared to the games
Birdie Newcomb: building, now that makes sense
Claudia13 Rossini: but at least i can look normal (ish) in SL
Praxislady Witt: still 3D? building?
Birdie Newcomb: and the language communities, great resource
Kali Pizzaro: and our cyberpsychology folk
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): Thank you Birdie! But there are many good simulations. That’s why I take in f2f students.
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): The other reason is to study SL as a communications/social tool
Kali Pizzaro: need a big VW when looking at health and how people behave etc
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): soc and anthro students can have a field day of field work here!
Svea Morane: Now we are talking Kali
Kali Pizzaro: oh my never saw you there
Kali Pizzaro: waves
Svea Morane:
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): any of SL’s subcultures merit a thesis
Claudia13 Rossini: architecture
Birdie Newcomb: An interviewer was asking me if I identified with my avatar — well, of course. It’s the ideal me!
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): language study
Kali Pizzaro: yes i am finding some interesting stuff in my PhD which i will share later in the year when I write up the phase one findings lol
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): Those of you in the side seats, please join us around the table if you wish. The table makes another seat when someone sits down. No problem if you need to leave early.
Birdie Newcomb: “phase one”?
Kali Pizzaro: i am using a sequential expoloratory design
Kali Pizzaro: two phases
Kali Pizzaro: ;-0
Kali Pizzaro: dont ask what the nesxt phase is lol
Kali Pizzaro: oh my typo city
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): oh my lovely transcript..ruint!
Claudia13 Rossini: lol
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): And don’t forget to take pix, folks, and upload to Flickr
Pathfinder Lester: heh
Praxislady Witt: I love it when Esme Qunhua of ISTE has b-monthly tours of sims one did not know existed!
Birdie Newcomb: Path is always so photogenic
Praxislady Witt: great learning tool, tours
Claudia13 Rossini: be sure to photo me from a flattering angle
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): Praxis, how do we find out about those tours?
Pathfinder Lester: that’s because I’m a robot
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): Yes, it was hard to find a flattering angle a few weeks ago on your bad hair day…
Laural McCallen: Join the SL ISTE Tour Group
Claudia13 Rossini: lol Griz
Birdie Newcomb: Do you pass the Turing test, Path?
Laural McCallen: She sends notices of the tours every other week
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): To which group(s)?
Laural McCallen: ISTE SL Tour Group
Pathfinder Lester: Birdie, i hope so!
Praxislady Witt: the ISTE Tour Groups, find in Search
Kali Pizzaro: oh i was sitting on the beach reading Turkle – alone together and she says o John Lester blah blah blah
Birdie Newcomb: Is ISTE still there? I thought it was gone
Kali Pizzaro: i am like ohhhhhh i know him
Kali Pizzaro: hehehe
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): I’ll be teaching that book soon, Kali
Laural McCallen: ISTE move to a new location
Pathfinder Lester: oh heck that’s right!
Laural McCallen: The island is gone.
Birdie Newcomb: where?
Kali Pizzaro: mmm not sure i agree with it all
Laural McCallen: LEt me find the landmark
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): Path knows everybody
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): ISTE is sharing an island now
Pathfinder Lester: she called me up and interviewed me for that new book of hers. I haven’t even read it yet.
Pathfinder Lester: lol
Praxislady Witt: yes, @ Laural, yours is correct one, ISTE SL Tour Group
rosavioletta: I have been exploring the making of machinimas for language learning conversations: many are the advantages once the basic skills for filming and editing are acquired. And a great experience for a class to work on, here’s a link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBTldBw-UqQ&feature=youtu.be
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): Here’s Scott Merrick’s blog on ISTE’s presence in SL: http://scottsecondlife.blogspot.com.au/2012/02/march-is-month-for-rebirth-of-iste.html
David Stack (richmedia): ISTE Events in Second Life: http://secondlife.iste.wikispaces.net/events
Tori Landau: blinks at all the links
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): we are URL-monsters!
rosavioletta: Click on mine first
Laural McCallen: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/EduIsland%209/20/70/22
Praxislady Witt: Esme Qunhua of ISTE uses a Google Spread sheet and sends to members in the group.
Laural McCallen: ISTE is at a parcel on Eduisland now
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): /me has link-envy now, rosa
Birdie Newcomb: Ah, I’ll visit
Svea Morane: At mayo clinic we can give tours of body parts… any takers?
Kali Pizzaro: yes please
Laural McCallen: BTW…anyone interested in presentations from K-12 on student projects in SL…our district hosting a virtual playground/mini conf at SLEEC ISland this saturday.
Praxislady Witt: heehee, which part?
Kali Pizzaro: although eh what body parts
Birdie Newcomb: sounds gross-out
Kali Pizzaro: raises eyebrows
Laural McCallen: https://sites.google.com/site/sleecisland/vitts-2012-conference-schedule
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): wonderful idea! I have a brain in a jar and the virtual head of SL artist Miso Susanowa. I’ll bring them along
rosavioletta: /me no subtitles mind you, be brave!
Claudia13 Rossini: do you offer new body parts?
Svea Morane: Tuesday this week was Apheresis.. taking blood apart
Pathfinder Lester: lol
Claudia13 Rossini: lol
Kali Pizzaro: oh yeah fab
Svea Morane: excellent educational meeting..
Birdie Newcomb: hlw do you take blood apart?
Praxislady Witt: Wow, TY Laural for sharing such a great resource
)
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): Yes!
Claudia13 Rossini: (that’s who stole my red blood cells)
Laural McCallen: LEt me share a landmark to the island.
Svea Morane: put blood in a centrifuge.. adn apin
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): seriously, that sounds like a great event!
Laural McCallen: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/SLEEC%20Island/56/132/29
Birdie Newcomb: like making skim milk…
Svea Morane: Talking about Skin Cancer – melanoma next Friday
Laural McCallen: IT is a closed island normally, but will be open this Saturday.
Pathfinder Lester: I’ve got to head out. Take care, folks. have a great weekend!
rosavioletta: I promise this is going to be my last link tonight…http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73zGB4V1l6A
Laural McCallen: Access is normally through group membership.
Kali Pizzaro: yes Svea does great work
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): TC Path!
Svea Morane: See you later Path
Claudia13 Rossini: bye Path
Kali Pizzaro: then you can come and nbe interviewed for my PhD lol
Kali Pizzaro: heheh
Kali Pizzaro: plug plug
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): seya Path. Say howdy to Sherry Turkle
Pathfinder Lester: good to see you all. hope to see you again soon!
Birdie Newcomb: always a showoff
Kali Pizzaro: coughs
Pathfinder Lester: Iggy, lol
Pathfinder Lester: will do
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): Laural, who can belong to the group?
Kali Pizzaro: cheers path
Tori Landau: night Path
Laural McCallen: It is open.
Laural McCallen: Just search for SL Educators of Escambia County
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): Ah ok. Great!
Praxislady Witt: /me is waving bye to Path
Laural McCallen: It just has helped us deter folks not interested in education
Claudia13 Rossini: do you get a lot of attendees Svea?
Svea Morane: varies Claudia.. Tuesday was just 11… but teh f2f version had 20…
Svea Morane: so not bad for us
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): By the way – if you know anyone involved in virtual worlds education in Georgia – there’s a new group that has formed – tell them about “Virtual Education in Georgia” (VEG)
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): Rosa, your transcriber LOVES links….keep them coming. I’ve automated how I make them live now.
Claudia13 Rossini: that’s not bad actually
Laural McCallen: Looove the name of the group.
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): It was very carefully chosen.
Laural McCallen: ARe they Higher Ed or K-12 or mixed?
Svea Morane: apheresis is not exactly a barn burner topic
Kali Pizzaro: i bet
Claudia13 Rossini: lol Griz
Kali Pizzaro: hehe
Kali Pizzaro: it is all important though
Claudia13 Rossini: well, i’d like to see it Svea
Laural McCallen: Oh…LOL…conference is not this weekend…next weekend.
Laural McCallen: Ugh…feeling pressure to get ready
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): Higher ed at this point, but I don’t think it’s closed to k-12. Really, just started 2 weeks ago.
Laural McCallen: April 28th.
Laural McCallen: Cool. Know some folks in Georgia I will share!
rosavioletta: I promised that was the last @Iggy I promised that was the last one tonight….;-)
Claudia13 Rossini: thanks Svea
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): Let me plunk in here with the question Grinn asked at the beginning. She needed to leave, but I thought it was a great question which we could talk about more in the future…
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): ” Is there such a thing as a job board where educators could sign up to volunteer to work on projects, etc.”
Svea Morane: np Claudia.. mailing list
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): do any of you know anything about the SLActions meeting? http://www.slactions.org/2012/?page_id=2
Claudia13 Rossini: more like hang out here and you’ll end up volunteering for stuff
Kali Pizzaro: we tried to do that before as i keep banging on – collaborate – collaborate – collaborate
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): might be a way to get me back to Spain, as it appears that was the closest RL Venue last y ear
Kali Pizzaro:
Birdie Newcomb: Hadn’t heard of it Iggy
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): it meets IRL and in SL
Praxislady Witt: good to know though
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): I would help more poeple with projects but have only known of two.
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): topics are broadly related to VWs and games
Claudia13 Rossini: become a builder Griz..you’ll be swamped
Praxislady Witt: has anyone created a game in VW, plz?
Kali Pizzaro: we should have a vwer conference (oops just talked herself into something don’t tell AJ)
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): I’m not a great builder, but could help with some things – builders’ grunt work
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): no…I tried a bit with Usher and learned a RP Hud but keep dying
Praxislady Witt: aaaahhh
Claudia13 Rossini: lol
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): I’m thinking of adding meters for the participants next year and have spoken to a Spellfire coder
Praxislady Witt: glad someone revived you
Kali Pizzaro: what about creating teams with different skills
Kali Pizzaro: then teach each other
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): I was surprised how much fun the sword fights are
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): but I’m awful!
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): /me prefers taco gun fights
Kali Pizzaro: maybe that aint such a bad idea
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): I don’t think Poe’s tales include taco guns….what a great idea!
Claudia13 Rossini: i suck at games
Birdie Newcomb: taco — food fights?
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): I really like that idea, Kali.
Kali Pizzaro: vwer teams then teach each other over the summer
Praxislady Witt: oh, yes, for cinco de mayo!!
Kali Pizzaro: what is your topic next week Iggy
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): oh yes! It’s a good one!
Kali Pizzaro: ?hehe sorry Grizzla could not resist
Marc Rexen: I like that idea, using something like a DCS combat meter to “track” learning objective achievement.
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): “What will you do on your summer (or winter!) vacation with virtual worlds?”
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): My students wanted more risk…Poe tales are dangerous settings
Claudia13 Rossini: vacation? vacation?……………i remember those
Praxislady Witt: hmmm, old world question? no?
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): they argued for a reasonable level of violent menace
Kali Pizzaro: PhD three wee letters
Kali Pizzaro: boo hoo
Claudia13 Rossini: blood thirsty kids
Birdie Newcomb: Lost Worlds (dinosaurs?)
Kali Pizzaro: hehe
Svea Morane: The second one is easier Kali
Kali Pizzaro:
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): Yeah, when I do student orientations, I go through a brief bit about avoiding griefers, and assure them that no one can kill their av. A few are disappointed.
Claudia13 Rossini: Africa.can you survive a walk across the Serengeti plains
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): @Claudia, blood thirsty teacher who games IRL with dice and paper
Claudia13 Rossini: lol, better yet. can you survive academia
Praxislady Witt: LOL!
Praxislady Witt: LOL @ Grizzla
Zotarah Shepherd: I took some Spell Fire swords etc to the Teen Grid years ago and the kids liked it
Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): I’d like to devote a roundtable discussion soon, to Kali’s & Grinn’s idea(s)
Kali Pizzaro: woo
Marc Rexen: Crowd-sourcing the points of a debate maybe, good arguments gain points, poor presentation loses them…with the crowd determining the “health” of the speaker.
Kali Pizzaro: lol
Kali Pizzaro: i might be deed in minute
Kali Pizzaro: lol
Marc Rexen: I was thinking of that…two dead on stage, 1 to go.
Claudia13 Rossini: i’d never survive logging in
Kali Pizzaro: now that was not a typo that was Scottish
Kali Pizzaro:
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia):
Claudia13 Rossini: though opera is great for general mayhem
Praxislady Witt: i knew that, Kali, haha
Kali Pizzaro: I would need a dress like Birdies
Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): @Zo, we’ll need to talk about that experience you had
Birdie Newcomb: Or Hamlet — all dead but the extras
Claudia13 Rossini: lol
Zotarah Shepherd: Ok Iggy
