Iggy’s note: A dreadful day for Second Life meant that many of us got to the Roundtable late or not at all. Many thanks to Wren for saving this transcript of what amounted to an interesting chat!

[ [11:44] Kali Pizzaro: Hi everyone, and welcome to the Virtual Worlds Education Roundtable. We meet each Thursday at 11:30am SLT for an hour. 7:30pm In UK, 2:30pm est

[11:44] Kali Pizzaro: The Virtual Worlds Education Roundtable is a forum to educate and inform the community about issues that are important and relevant to education.

[11:44] Kali Pizzaro: This is a public meeting, so we will be keeping and publishing a transcript of what is said in local chat. If you’ve not seen our transcripts, you should check them out – they are an excellent information asset.

[11:44] Kali Pizzaro: Tonight’s theme: Open Forum, so let rip!

[11:44] Kali Pizzaro: let’s start as we always do with introductions. I am Evelyn McElhinney RN, Lecturer in Advanced Practice and doctoral student at Glasgow Caledonian University in Scotland.

[11:45] Wrenaria Antiesse: Kimmy Hescock, social and immersive media manager, Oregon State University

[11:45] Galileo Zeplin: ed johnson – board of regents, university system of georgia

[11:46] Max Chatnoir: Mary Anne Clark, Biology, texas Wesleyan University

[11:46] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): ross carruthers owner of a private company rosspctraining.co.uk

[11:46] Kali Pizzaro: think that is us ?

[11:47] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): looks like it for now

[11:47] Kali Pizzaro: Pink?

[11:48] Kali Pizzaro: Ok so we have seen a few movements in VWs in the last few weeks and we of course discussed what keeps us in SL and cloudparty last week

[11:48] PinkSamurai Fairlady: Business consultant, trainer/executive coach in Dubai

[11:48] Kali Pizzaro: cheers

[11:48] Kali Pizzaro: What other changes or media has caught your eye about VW education lately

[11:48] Kali Pizzaro: caught

[11:49] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): well i think the big news for me is the UWA machinima competition in search for wisdom

[11:50] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): http://uwainsl.blogspot.com.au/2012/07/machinimuwa-v-all-51-works-grand-finale.html

[11:50] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): is the top 51 entries

[11:50] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): the prize fund is 3.5k Australian dolalrs

[11:50] Kali Pizzaro: have they got to be in SL – wooo

[11:50] Kali Pizzaro: or any VW

[11:50] Kali Pizzaro: ?

[11:50] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): they had to have at least one scene containing western australia 100 treasures

[11:51] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): university of western australia

[11:51] Kali Pizzaro: ah that is the criteria?

[11:51] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): i was a bit too late to enter this time around

[11:52] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): it was 3.5 to 4.5 minutes long and titled the quest for wisdom, and had to contain at least one reference to UWA 100 treasures

[11:52] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): i love the title quest for wisdom

[11:52] Kali Pizzaro: :) positive news and use of VWs

[11:52] Kali Pizzaro: Do folks think there is more positive news coming out lately

[11:52] Kali Pizzaro: I have a feeling there is

[11:52] PinkSamurai Fairlady: recently, and edcuator from the states who’s very new to SL asked if there were any policies in place about introducing VWs in schools and districts

[11:53] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): oh yeah and they had a live conference weekend was great fun

[11:53] PinkSamurai Fairlady: ?

[11:53] PinkSamurai Fairlady: unfortunately this is not positive news

[11:53] Kali Pizzaro: whaat age group

[11:53] Kali Pizzaro: Pink

[11:53] PinkSamurai Fairlady: I was told there were no policies or guidelines

[11:54] Kali Pizzaro: we just use our “fitness to Practice or student code of conduct

[11:54] PinkSamurai Fairlady: elementary and middle mostly

[11:54] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): SL really needs to get its finger out and make safe PG only places strictly monitored

[11:54] Max Chatnoir: Soes that mean open or closed access?

[11:54] Max Chatnoir: No policies.

[11:54] Kali Pizzaro: Do you mean LL policies or local policies

[11:54] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): its not very impressive for reeling in schools / educators

[11:54] Max Chatnoir: Local policies.

[11:55] Galileo Zeplin: didnt linden shut down the teen grid?

[11:55] Zotarah Shepherd: Hi

[11:55] Kali Pizzaro: ZO

[11:55] Zotarah Shepherd: Yes they did

[11:55] Kali Pizzaro: wooo

[11:55] Wrenaria Antiesse: hi Zo

[11:55] Max Chatnoir: Yes, but reduced age limit to 16

[11:55] PinkSamurai Fairlady: but has anyone who’s already been able to work with students at schools written any guidelines formats or does he have to start from scratch?

[11:55] Zotarah Shepherd: It took a half hour to log in and I had to use SL Beta to do it.

[11:55] Kali Pizzaro: we dont have specific to Sl we use our student code of conduct

[11:56] Kali Pizzaro: as this is just another tool so if they

[11:56] PinkSamurai Fairlady: yes there seems to be some maintenance work

[11:56] Kali Pizzaro: are in here as a student then it makes no difference

[11:56] Kali Pizzaro: they should act as in any class

[11:56] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): Arbor Pointe Hills (4,226,23) is an interesting sim, they are making a strict pg prep school sim

[11:57] Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): Hello all. Thank God. I rezzed in Zindra and it’s nice to be back to civilization

[11:57] Kali Pizzaro: we dont have a classroom guide a skills lab guide etc etc

[11:57] Max Chatnoir: In SL or elsewhere?

[11:57] Wrenaria Antiesse: Hi Iggy :)

[11:57] Galileo Zeplin: hehe iggy

[11:57] Kali Pizzaro: yeah right Iggy

[11:57] Zotarah Shepherd: I used to work on the teen grid. I had to get clearance to do it. Not tee4ns younger than 16 cannot be in SL so not clearance is needed

[11:57] Zotarah Shepherd: Hi Iggy

[11:57] Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): Keep in mind, if you are age-verified, a situation like today’s sends you to an adult WA

[11:58] PinkSamurai Fairlady: I think he was thinking more in terms of having SL or opensim based VW used inside the school .. is that something that he can just do ?

[11:58] Kali Pizzaro: yes mmm

[11:58] Wrenaria Antiesse: err

[11:58] Kali Pizzaro: yes Pink opensource

[11:58] Kali Pizzaro: behind the firewall

[11:58] Zotarah Shepherd: For that reason I selected to not go to Adult places in SL

[11:58] Wrenaria Antiesse: my understanding teens as young as 13 can use SL if they’re using it with a sponser organization

[11:58] Kali Pizzaro: or lock down your sim

[11:58] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): idd kali

[11:58] Wrenaria Antiesse: like, perhaps, a school?

[11:59] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): sim lockdown is good. but its keeping the little rats from porting off

[11:59] Zotarah Shepherd: Yes the sim for underage has to be closed so the teens cannot go to other parts of SL

[11:59] Kali Pizzaro: again code of conduct

[11:59] PinkSamurai Fairlady: hehehe yes

[11:59] Kali Pizzaro: i make them have a student avi and a personal avi

[11:59] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): and what is to stop them creating a new account and using that

[11:59] Zotarah Shepherd: Well mostly to protect them from predators and non-PG content

[11:59] Wrenaria Antiesse: not really different than the internet really, no?

[11:59] Kali Pizzaro: if they want to explore as a social network then make anothr avi

[12:00] Wrenaria Antiesse: hard to keep kids from surfing sites outside of what you want them to use for class

[12:00] Zotarah Shepherd: Teens have been making alt accounts posing as adults for years

[12:00] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): it depends how you define interent

[12:00] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): internet chat rooms

[12:00] Wrenaria Antiesse: well

[12:00] Wrenaria Antiesse: the browser based web

[12:00] Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): Interesting, Zo. In 2007 I age-verified because Pontiac’s sim required it. I was surprised at the time.

[12:00] Zotarah Shepherd: Teens told me that long ago

[12:00] Kali Pizzaro: Facebook esp

[12:00] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): yeah

[12:01] Kali Pizzaro: loads of kids on FB

[12:01] Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): Howdy AJ! Grizzla still cannot log on it seems.

[12:01] Kali Pizzaro: most of my nieces and nephews

[12:01] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): yeah at least now they have a report button

[12:01] AJ Brooks waves

[12:01] Zotarah Shepherd: Teens are curious but most told me they wanted to shop or sell things here

[12:01] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): it is a bit of common sense really tho

[12:01] Kali Pizzaro: my sis did not even know there was an age limit on FB

[12:01] Kali Pizzaro: AJ!

[12:02] Max Chatnoir: I did not know that either!

[12:02] Kali Pizzaro: ok so Do you think it would be useful as Pink suggests and have a local policy

[12:02] Zotarah Shepherd: Parents should be informed about any media their kids are using

[12:02] Kali Pizzaro: or do you need a very local to your school uni policy

[12:02] Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): I made it!

[12:02] PinkSamurai Fairlady: ah new to me too

[12:02] Wrenaria Antiesse: yay Grizz!

[12:02] Kali Pizzaro: or a separate VW at all

[12:02] Zotarah Shepherd: All schools should have policies

[12:02] Kali Pizzaro: poliocy

[12:02] Kali Pizzaro: policy

[12:02] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): its the difference between open systems and closed systems , ironically opensim is more open to being closed down

[12:02] Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): This talk of PG-content makes me wonder if we could edit preferences on lab machines to do what Zo suggested (and I just did in Firestorm): remove “adult” from areas that can be accessed by the viewer

[12:03] Zotarah Shepherd: The younger the student the more protection you need

[12:03] Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): What are we talking about? Policies about what?

[12:03] Kali Pizzaro: sorry Griz for VW use

[12:03] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): iggy that sounds like a good idea

[12:03] Kali Pizzaro: in schools

[12:03] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): removing adult access

[12:03] PinkSamurai Fairlady: I think people who’ve been able to use VWs at their schools who were able to convince shcools and parents should work on creating some guidelines for others

[12:03] Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): Ah thanks

[12:03] Kali Pizzaro: yeah we have done that

[12:03] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): depending on the age group there is always some hacker

[12:03] Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): I wish I had! At least all the Zindra folk were gray today because of lag

[12:04] Zotarah Shepherd: The best protection for kids is to teach them to protect themselves.

[12:04] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): who becomes the school hero

[12:04] Kali Pizzaro: good point Zo

[12:04] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): for showing people how to bypass stuff

[12:04] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): yeas zo

[12:04] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): agree

[12:04] Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): @Zo, I agree generally but you can lose your job at way in Higher Ed

[12:04] Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): *that way

[12:04] Zotarah Shepherd: Parents should have guidelines as should each teacher

[12:04] AJ Brooks: but what about schools who want to overstep and hacve their policies apply to what students do at home, like has happened many times with facebook?

[12:05] PinkSamurai Fairlady: but how do convince the schools and the districts to use VWs ?

[12:05] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): this is very dangerous territory

[12:05] PinkSamurai Fairlady: or do you need to?

[12:05] Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): If you use the SL Marketplace – even setting for only G-rated – the home page has a woman reclined in – um – nightwear

[12:05] PinkSamurai Fairlady: oh I am not age verified but

[12:05] Kali Pizzaro: however Iggy as i say do we have a policy for classroom , lab, bah blah or do we just need one – is the poicy about student behaviour or is it about protecting them from other parts o Sl?

[12:06] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): i think it depends on age level,,, 16+ is a good guide

[12:06] Zotarah Shepherd: If your students are over 18 they should have the modern life skills to know what is dangerous online

[12:06] Zotarah Shepherd: operative word being should

[12:06] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): yeah 18+ for sure but what about 16+… they are old enough to get married right?

[12:06] PinkSamurai Fairlady: lately when I opened the search I found some pictures that are no way to be called PG

[12:06] AJ Brooks: something magical happens at 18 that gives them those skills?

[12:06] Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): keep in mind, as Marty said last week, that woman in a corset is SL’s primary audience, not us

[12:06] Kali Pizzaro: lol

[12:06] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): idd aj idd

[12:06] Zotarah Shepherd: It depends on the state

[12:06] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): the magic thing that happens is legal liability to an adult

[12:07] Zotarah Shepherd: I wish AJ

[12:07] Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): @AJ not last time I checked

[12:07] Zotarah Shepherd: My thesis is about such life skills being necessary

[12:07] AJ Brooks: but thatÕs not what Zotarah was referring to

[12:07] Kali Pizzaro: setting your area to home is good so they can tp back quick if get into an uncomfotable situation

[12:07] PinkSamurai Fairlady: what I am also interested in is how do you introduce the idea to your school or district

[12:07] PinkSamurai Fairlady: are their any samples of proposals or something like that

[12:07] Kali Pizzaro: showcase folks work

[12:08] Kali Pizzaro: they pedagogy the evidence

[12:08] Zotarah Shepherd: Parents should be informed and consent to what minors see and do

[12:08] Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): I’d take them to a different virtual world, PinkSamurai, not SL

[12:08] Kali Pizzaro: which one

[12:08] Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): One of the counties in metro Atlanta has adopted use of a VW (not SL). I haven’t seen anything about how they convinced their country school board.

[12:08] Zotarah Shepherd: I would take younger kids to Reaction Grid or Jokaydia

[12:08] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): I think SL can be used but only under strict supervision

[12:09] PinkSamurai Fairlady: that is ok but how many school would readily accept to install an opensim VW on their servers for education and to conduct classes there

[12:09] PinkSamurai Fairlady: ?

[12:09] Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): I’d find an OpenSim Grid with content suitable for minors, or a Unity 3D world..but if you want a big community, SL is still “it” but you’ll meet unsavory folks if the kids wander far.

[12:09] Kali Pizzaro: you need someone to run it

[12:09] Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): Cloud Party will have to decide what it wants to allow, too. My first visit to the Beginner’s area, someone had imported a gigantic – um – body part

[12:09] Kali Pizzaro: yep

[12:10] PinkSamurai Fairlady: already?

[12:10] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): there is always going to be the juvenile humour its irrepressible

[12:10] Zotarah Shepherd: Any school or even parents who do not trust a public grid for their child should consider a closed grid option

[12:10] Kali Pizzaro: so ok if they are school age maybe we need to be careful

[12:10] Galileo Zeplin: oh, speaking of cloud party…noticed that they’ve begun to sell islands

[12:10] PinkSamurai Fairlady: I heard that it is more difficult on computers than SL

[12:10] Kali Pizzaro: what about older in higher ed

[12:10] PinkSamurai Fairlady: one of my fiends computer kept shutting down

[12:10] Kali Pizzaro: do we need the same restrictions

[12:10] Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): in *any* environment with user generated content and a general audience, we’ll have to deal with this. Just like all the Gorean slaves I saw when I Logged in today and SL sent me to Zindra! Imagine if that were a presentation to colleagues!

[12:11] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): idd iggy

[12:11] Zotarah Shepherd nods

[12:11] Kali Pizzaro: mm yeah not good

[12:11] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): the whole gorean thing was a shocker to me

[12:11] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): and im nearly 40

[12:11] Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid) makes note to self – never log in to SL in the presence of other people. Log in, then show them…

[12:11] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): sl has been pretty shocking

[12:11] Kali Pizzaro: however, half the mothers are probably reading “50 shades of grey” lol

[12:11] Wrenaria Antiesse: haha that’s always my preferred method, Grizz

[12:11] Zotarah Shepherd: Make your settings only go to mature and PG sims

[12:11] Kali Pizzaro: anyway back to what we are talking about

[12:11] PinkSamurai Fairlady: lol

[12:12] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): but at the same time there are some places that are truly amazing

[12:12] Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): but we have a world that is not primarily educational in SL. If we bring minors in, we have to somehow demonstrate in loco parentis

[12:12] Max Chatnoir: One of my students incautiously accepted a TP invitation and wound up in a nudie bar.

[12:12] Kali Pizzaro: yes make a list of tp areas

[12:12] AJ Brooks: I have never seen a single thing I would consider “shocking” in sl. Inappropriate, yes, but shocking?

[12:12] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): and the classes I have attended have been excellent and amazingly cheap

[12:12] Max Chatnoir: Of course all of the students flocked to his computer.

[12:12] Kali Pizzaro: me too i must say AJ

[12:12] Zotarah Shepherd: If someone want me to see something on an Adult sim I am told I cannot go there and that it is Adult.

[12:12] Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): After the Virginia Tech shootings, I stopped my annual trip to the gun range for a student group. You just cannot be too careful today with this generation of parents.

[12:12] Galileo Zeplin: ironically, the entire gorean cult was created by a philosophy professor :)

[12:12] Wrenaria Antiesse: agreed AJ

[12:13] Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): Oh, I have AJ. My personal av got raped in SL when I was a poor noob.

[12:13] Kali Pizzaro: so do we not let student useyoutube in case they stumble upon something they should not see

[12:13] Kali Pizzaro: oh Grizz!

[12:13] Zotarah Shepherd: I would rather parents be too protective than too permissive

[12:13] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): agree with grizz i think either you dont shock easy or just not looked taht hard

[12:13] Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): Good heavens, Grizzla. I’m so sorry. This place can be *vile*

[12:14] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): agree iggy

[12:14] PinkSamurai Fairlady: ?

[12:14] PinkSamurai Fairlady: AJ people are different and there are people from around the world coming to SL and a lot really shocks them

[12:14] Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): Yeah. Well, I had at least enough sense to TP out of there

[12:14] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): but same goes for internet

[12:14] Wrenaria Antiesse: and the real world

[12:14] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): the new fashion for pregnancy is interesting

[12:14] Zotarah Shepherd: Parents need to be educated as well. Especially about victim proofing their kids…

[12:14] Kali Pizzaro: ok so lets change tack

[12:14] Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): True, but with other forms of Internet engagement, what I pick for class offers a more controlled setting

[12:14] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): responsible parenthood and consequences of action

[12:15] Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): For instance, students who blog moderate all comments

[12:15] Kali Pizzaro: how about positive stories i think i see a bit more in the media

[12:15] Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): I also, as a noob, was shopping in a clothes store with my sister – walked around a rack of clothes to find a couple engaged in non-G activities

[12:15] AJ Brooks: First off, I’m a seasoned veteran in SL who has logged more hours than probably most of you combined, so it certainly is not that I’ve not looked -a lthough I’ve never gone out TO look for it – but I don’t hide in a hole either. Second, perhaps I don’t shock easy, but I assure you, having authored many articles, and spoken to many people, Grizzla’s travesty is, thanks goodness, a rare exception

[12:15] Kali Pizzaro: do you find the same

[12:15] Zotarah Shepherd: We could have a contest for that AJ. : )

[12:15] Kali Pizzaro: yes agreed

[12:15] Kali Pizzaro: @Aj

[12:15] AJ Brooks: lol- well, Z -

[12:16] Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): I agree with AJ. In 5 classes taught, we had one serious incident of stalking and that was in my first semester of SL.

[12:16] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): aj i could give you a few examples but tbh lets talk about the positive side of things

[12:16] Kali Pizzaro: yes

[12:16] Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid) agrees

[12:16] Zotarah Shepherd: Hours logged in SL 16 per day for over 4 years?

[12:16] Max Chatnoir: I’ve taught classes on Genome for several years and have only had to eject an avatar twice for inappropriate behavior.

[12:16] Kali Pizzaro: ok so positive stories

[12:16] Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): Heavens no. I’m still a noob by Zo’s definition.

[12:16] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): theres a lot of incredibly positive stuff and people and sl

[12:16] Zotarah Shepherd: Every student should know how to avoid being a victim

[12:17] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): the nci and education classes are superb and ridiculously cheap / free

[12:17] Kali Pizzaro: for me my phd is really showing a fantastic community spirit

[12:17] Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): It’s just different for college kids. After they sign a waiver, they can do as they please..after class. They are not minors.

[12:17] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): covering 2d/3d scirpting, marketing

[12:17] Kali Pizzaro: altruistic

[12:17] PinkSamurai Fairlady: I agree that if you know where to go you rarly come across anything unpleasant

[12:17] Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): My classes have loved the art openings and events in SL

[12:18] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): well i guess my first mistake was to go to a place called crackden

[12:18] Kali Pizzaro: yes the art is pretty amazing

[12:18] Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): Positive story: right after the Japan tsunami, someone started group chat for a fashion group I’m in (yeah, I know) – saying she was a grad student in Japan, waiting to hear if they were going to be evacuated bc of the reactor – and would someone please talk to her, to get her mind off it

[12:18] PinkSamurai Fairlady: Iggy what age

[12:18] Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): @PinkSamurai, 18-22

[12:18] Kali Pizzaro: Relay for Life – amazing achievements and even SL09

[12:18] Kali Pizzaro: in such a short space of time

[12:19] Max Chatnoir: Yes, the RFL contribution increases every year.

[12:19] Kali Pizzaro: the great sims that can share teaching or be visited

[12:19] Kali Pizzaro: by your students folks always willing to share and discuss their work

[12:19] Zotarah Shepherd: When I was on the Teen grid an inappropriate 14 year olds were banned and reported to LL by the teen manager while I was trying to explain to them that such behavior was not allowed. The 15 year old teen manager had lower tolerance than I did. I was impressed.

[12:20] PinkSamurai Fairlady: yes RFL is one of the events that I really wait for

[12:20] Kali Pizzaro: yes so they create their own etiquette

[12:20] Kali Pizzaro: my students did that

[12:20] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): one thing i have been thinking of recently is to give people who may not be in the best rl environment a feeling of what it would be like to be in a top class private boarding school, which a forest campus etc.

[12:20] Kali Pizzaro: mmm

[12:20] Kali Pizzaro: ok ten mins left folks

[12:20] Grizzla (grizzla.pixelmaid): That’s very cool.

[12:21] Zotarah Shepherd: It is the same as a fieldtrip in RL. You cannot predict who or what you will see.

[12:21] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): good stuff zo

[12:21] Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): I need to give my students the idea of what the 99% live like. We have that campus already, Prof!

[12:21] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): zero tolerance

[12:21] Zotarah Shepherd: I agree Iggy

[12:21] PinkSamurai Fairlady: where Iggy?

[12:22] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): i think one thing SL offers is the ability to learn how to be an entrepreneur

[12:22] Kali Pizzaro: yeah we are in the middle of the city these folks are not that sooked by stuff lol

[12:22] Kali Pizzaro: spooked

[12:22] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): and make mistakes here instead of irl

[12:22] Kali Pizzaro: shocked

[12:23] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): I think at 18 + people need to be treated as adults

[12:23] PinkSamurai Fairlady: ?

[12:23] PinkSamurai Fairlady: ah just remembered one thing that I always consider good news

[12:23] Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): @Prof, that’s our attitude. But the waiver protects me from parents. A few kids dropped the class after getting it to sign.

[12:24] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): for example youtube is either a fantastic teaching resource or a wasteful distraction that should be banned

[12:24] Zotarah Shepherd: I like the idea of teaching students to be world citizens, aware and prepared for whatever life throws at them

[12:24] PinkSamurai Fairlady: More educators are getting to know about VWs ad how to use it for education along with good games

[12:24] Camie Rembrandt: Hi everyone (login problems)

[12:24] Kali Pizzaro: sure Camie

[12:24] Kali Pizzaro: hi

[12:24] PinkSamurai Fairlady: at the moment there are at least two courses that I know of happening

[12:24] Kali Pizzaro: just about to finish

[12:24] PinkSamurai Fairlady: one is frot he states and the other is Spanish

[12:24] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): agree pink, sl as a teaching tool on dealing with the darker side of life

[12:25] Zotarah Shepherd: There is a positive and Negative use of almost anything. You can use a hammer to build a house or as a weapon to kill someone.

[12:25] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): here is my argument, isnt it better for a 16 year old to get pregnant in sl than irl

[12:25] AJ Brooks: What?

[12:25] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): to see the consequences of actions

[12:26] PinkSamurai Fairlady: lol

[12:26] Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): um, no, Prof. I don’t want kids with prim babies or fleshy ones

[12:26] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): like it or not teenagers have sex

[12:26] Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): I know (grins) I was one once

[12:27] AJ Brooks shakes head

[12:27] Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): but we should not be encouraging it either

[12:27] Zotarah Shepherd: Actually in SL an underage pregnant teen is against the SL TOS.

[12:27] Kali Pizzaro: well is it different from giving them a doll to take care of in rl

[12:27] Kali Pizzaro: to learn parenting or what it feels like to have a baby

[12:27] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): sl as sex education maybe

[12:27] Kali Pizzaro: do that all the time in UK

[12:27] Zotarah Shepherd: Because it presumes child sex.

[12:28] Kali Pizzaro: i am not saying i agree

[12:28] PinkSamurai Fairlady: yes the difference in my opinion that there is more sense of self in SL

[12:28] Kali Pizzaro: just throwing it out there

[12:28] Kali Pizzaro: ;)

[12:28] Kali Pizzaro: ok folks two mins nearly done

[12:29] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): SL is an amazing place to meet very cool people, but most people only see the sex

[12:29] Kali Pizzaro: yes and there is so much more to it than that

[12:29] Kali Pizzaro: hwoever sex is part of life

[12:29] PinkSamurai Fairlady: I think it depends on whee they go and the activities that they themselves seek

[12:29] Kali Pizzaro: and what you are teaching

[12:29] PinkSamurai Fairlady: I remember calling for help in a building group

[12:29] Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): agreed. SL is perfect for building simulations because of the cheap premade content and ability to make your own.

[12:30] Kali Pizzaro: if teaching sexuality issues then maybe these things are ok to disover

[12:30] PinkSamurai Fairlady: the person who came to the school to help and discovered that it is for education

[12:30] Kali Pizzaro: not my fienl

[12:30] Kali Pizzaro: filed

[12:30] Kali Pizzaro: oh my

[12:30] PinkSamurai Fairlady: was so happy that he said he was honored to have come and met eveyone

[12:30] Kali Pizzaro: field

[12:30] Professor IngloriousDecap (ingloriousdecap): yeah RAD, rapid application development SL is lightyears ahead of opensim

[12:30] AJ Brooks: lol

[12:30] Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): but it’s true that Trident, one of my suppliers for House of Usher, keeps the doors open by catering to the Gorean RPers

[12:30] Kali Pizzaro: ok folks that is us

[12:30] PinkSamurai Fairlady: and that it was the first time in his years in SL to discover that it was used for something that good

[12:30] Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): so I try to educate my classes that SL is a big tent

[12:30] Kali Pizzaro: time up

[12:30] Kali Pizzaro: ;)

[12:31] Kali Pizzaro: nice finish iggy

[12:31] Iggy (ignatius.onomatopoeia): go feed that dog, Kali!

[12:31] Kali Pizzaro: SL is a big tent

[12:31] AJ Brooks: thanks god for commas
